History of radio plays performance work

Radio plays are over 70 years old and for 50 years it is not as popular as it used to be but it is still around today on other radios or you can listen to them on the computer from different sites or you may want to buy the records. It was created in 1927 when the scripts and short stories were able to be broadcasted. Even though It started in the 1920's and 30's and was influenced by the theatre it became very popular in the 1940's.
Guglioelmo Marconi invented the first modern radio play. He transmitted a wireless signal across his italian estate in 1896. The radio plays are very popular from the BBC 4 because they do short stories everyday by different actors.
Radio plays are simular to acting but apart from you are not seen just heard and you can use scripts and sound effects.

Most radio drama is very badly written. Radio drama is an endangered species. It has never taken a hold of mainstream programming on commercial radio in the UK. It used to be the mainstream in the States and Australia but lost out to TV in the middle to late fifties.

It is under threat within public radio services including the BBC because of the pressure of monetarist ideology and the fact that authors and radio drama directors have been too complacent. IRDP is a significant oasis and continues to support the principle of the original play.

Evaluation on my radio play. Performance

When we filmed our radio play I think it went well because our voices were clear and loud. We rehearsed before we was filmed. I think it went well and we didn't make any mistakes the second time we done it. We was reading from our scripts and using different voices for different characters. We also used sound effects. We could have used some music at the start or in between lines. We could have used background sounds and noises of the plane. If we could do it again I would change the voices of my characters more so you can really tell a difference between the different character I was playing. I would want to do more background noises and add background music. we worked well as a group because we have different voices and we worked on the script together. I think our script was good because it wasn't to long and the story was clear. Also it was good with the amount of people we had because if we had to many characters then the story line would of gone off track. The details of each character throughout the scene did stay in character unless you changed character. Most characters were worried, scared or afraid of what was going to happen. If we do our radio play again then we will have music at the start and at the end and we will do the music on logic pro. Also we could get different noises for the background such as the plane landing or taking off.

Me and James are going to talk in the trailer and Dennis is making the music for the start and finish of our radio play. Me and James listened to the music that he made on logic and told him what to improve on and what parts he should make longer which is repetition. We also told Dennis to make some of the tracks slow in some parts and then make it faster in some other tracks. It is only a short piece of introduction music just for the start and at the end of our radio play.

sheet 2.2.5 Aims of a performance

What is the theme of the piece? It is about a plane journey that is in the danger of crashing.

Why did we choose the theme? Because it seemed exciting to do and the story has a twist to it.

Who is it for? It is mainly for teenagers and adults because they will understand the story better than younger people.

What do you want our piece to do? Shock and twist with peoples thoughts and excite them because you will want to see what happens in the end.

What style of performance will we use? Naturalism

What are the dramatic possibilities of the piece? The story is dramatic because the pilot has a heart attack. But at the end he doesn't die and people survive.

sounds for our radio play

Sound effects happen in two different ways.
1. live sounds
2. pre recorded sound
Make a list of all the sound effects your play needs. Include what materials/ props are required, plus when and where any recording is to be done.
In our radio play we are using sound effects with all different objects, but most noises can be from us we dont need objects for them. I think the sound effects will be quite hard but we know when they are used and we know what they are.

Narrator: Our radio play is going to be about a plane that is in danger of crashing. But what happens in the end ? I am going to be the air hostess and the narrator. Dennis is going to be the detective, Tom and a person on the plane. James is the pilot and the kid. Flight 1666 takes off from Gatwick airport going on a journey to JFK airport.

Detective Smith: Can I help? I saw that something was wrong. Im a detective.

Tom: Yeah, hes had a heart attack but we need to move him because this auto pilot might not last. We need to be safe and keep calm.

Detective: well i know alot about planes and i used to fly them all the time so ill stay here and watch it to make sure nothing goes wrong.

Air hostess: okay well im going to check on everyone, make sure there fine and not surspicious of anything. (background chatting)

Narator: The aircraft is still holding on, the auto pilot is still working and people are getting told to keep calm, but imagen what is going through their heads "is the plane going to land or are we going to die".

Unknown: can you tell me what's going on, its not fair that your not telling us. We could die.

Air hostess: can you calm down please, your not going to die your perfectly safe you just need to keep calm.

Detective smith: can Rosie and Tom please come to the front of the plane please. Right we need to land this plane soon, we cant go any further its to dangerous.

Air hostess + Tom: okay

Detective Smith: we are now going to land for everyones safety.

Narator: the plane has now landed and everyone is glad to be safe and stopped panacking. The paramedics came running over and carried the pilot out of the plane. You can see the smiles on peoples faces becuase they have finally landed.

Detective Smith: That was lucky.

ideas about our radio play. performance work

Today we discussed our ideas because the murder of the pilot was too hard and wouldn't have been realistic. So we decided to make the pilot have a heart attack, so he can't fly the plane. Someone on the plane flies it after being questioned and tells them how experienced he is.
My character is an air hostess who is 25, everyone notices her makeup and her uniform. People notice how she looks and her personality. In the script we are going to add in someone asking about her perfume so from that we are able to picture more about her personality and what she is like. My characters name is Rosie.
Today we developed more because we know more about what we are doing and are now more confident with the story line. All we need to do now is write the script.

I am going to narrate the credits and say what the title of our radio play is, which is will they get there alive?. James is doing the background sound affects. Dennis is organising the script.

As the air hostess I welcome everyone onto the plane, being polite and smiley. Then show them where there seats are. James talks to everyone on the plane over the speaker and says roughly what time we will land in America.

Radio play performance planning

Aircraft scene
Dennis
James
Lauren

It starts off when everyone is on the plane going to America but then half way through, the lights start to go off and something strange happens. Everyone starts to get worried and wonders what is going on but no one knows what to do. People start to realise the plane is getting lower but when the air hostess goes to see the captain to see what is happening she sees that the pilot is dead so someone must have murdered him. They realise the murderer is still on the plane and they try to find out who it is. In the end someone on the plane tries to fly the plane and they survive. In the background there are noises of people talking quickly and sounding worried. At the start before all of that happens the air hostesses are going to be talking and then when the end happens you can see the change in them. Even though everyone survived they didn't find the person who killed the pilot and at the end he gets away.
The characters will be the air hostess, kids, one main person and background noises.
On the plane the flight is half way through. Some of the kids are screaming but most people are watching a film. In the background people are talking about going to America.

My character is the air hostess. At the start I'm going to be all nice and polite but then in the end I'm really scared and worried. I'm panicking but I have to make out that nothing's wrong because you can't worry everyone else on the plane. You have to keep people calm. We are all going to be doing the background noises.
